Sophie, a discerning postgraduate student in archaeology, was thrilled to be selected for a summer excavation project on a remote continental site. The brochure had promised real-world fieldwork, and the prospectus described advanced facilities for digs and research. When she arrived, the site was teeming with students, researchers, and even a visiting multinational team. Sophie shared a balcony dorm with members of a theatre troupe who were there to document the project with acrobatic performances in the evenings.

During the day, Sophie would carefully sift through glacial soil, hunting for fossils and tools. One afternoon, a fellow student gullibly believed he had found a dinosaur tooth, only to be told it was a modern barbecue skewer. Laughter followed, and Sophie offered him a chocolate bar as consolation.

That same week, news broke out about an embezzlement scandal involving the local heritage council. There was an intense argument between staff and officials. Sophie watched as tensions rose, and a formal confirmation of investigation was later issued.

Despite the drama, Sophie remained focused. She avoided the nearby bistro that became the gossip hub and instead worked late into the night analyzing material samples. On a call with her professor, she said, “The site is chill—both literally and emotionally. But I’m learning so much.”

As the succession of discoveries piled up, Sophie wrote updates for the university’s prospectus and liaised with museum officials. On the final day, she wore a flowery frock for the closing procession, where the most fierce and dedicated students were honored.

Sophie knew she had found her calling—and though her grant had just plummeted, she saw a future in research as bright as the sun over the fallow fields.
